Churchdown & Innsworth
Churchdown, 1086
The village itself is based around the foot of Chosen Hill or Churchdown Hill depending on which name you refer to it. Geographically the name makes perfect sense with the church of St. Bartholomew on top of the hill built on top of an Iron Age encampment. However, the name itself could refer to a Celtic term "crouco" meaning a hill or mound. This though could have been corrupted to form the word church influenced by the Old English word "cirice" meaning church. The down (dun) suffix was added during the Saxon era to describe the land at the foot of the hill, due to its gradient.
Innsworth, 794
Now known for its miltary heritage, Innsworth was once a farm before World War 2. The name itself is recorded as far back as the eighth century. There are several suggestions as to where the name itself comes from. The suffix of worth means enclosure in Old English. The prefix "Inn" could refer to a personal name. But Ine is more likely to be an early Welsh name meaning Inis or in modern Ynys, which is an island. So the place could refer to an enclosure on an island in the middle of a watermeadow, due to its position close to Hatherley and Horsbere Brooks.
