Hempsted, 1086
A village just west of the canal is Hempstead a historic hamlet within the Gloucester City Council. Hempsted is a common name throughout the UK, meaning the high homestead. The settlement was most likely developed within the Saxon times. The church of St. Swithun dates from Norman times and it was one of the first endowments of Llanthony Priory founded in 1136. The church was named St. Swithun by 1417. According to the Domesday Book of 1086, there were 6 villagers, 8 smallholders, and 6 slaves. Resources wise the village had in its possession 3 lord plough teams, 6 men plough teams, and half of a fishery. In 1066 the lord of the manor was Edric Lang & Earl Harold’s Thagn. King William took the reigns from 1086 onward. The settlement’s worth was worth three pounds, from 1270 this was worth £2,189.48.
