Introduction to Project
Welcome to Gloucester Street by Street. An in-depth guide to the streets of Gloucester and its surrounding suburbs. As a historian the thought of how we all appeared in the first place often occurs. This gazetteer sheds light on how Gloucester developed from a place of Roman occupation to a thriving diverse city with a rich cultural history.
This project started in 2022 and has been studied and refined ever since. The historical records are extensive and numerous, leading to a good general coverage of the entire city and its neighborhoods.
Limitations to the Research
As with all historical projects, there are limitations to the research carried out. Historical evidence only survives with the records and sources available. Some records no longer exist or need to be completed due to the passage of time. However, this does not mean to say that no evidence exists. Much of the answers have come from the Gloucester Borough Records, now kept in the Gloucestershire Archives.
