Tuffley

Tuffley, 1086

According to the Domesday Book of 1086, Tuffley was occupied with 45 villagers, 21 smallholders, and 12 slaves. The area's landowner was St. Peter's Abbey our current day cathedral. The estate was valued at £8 in 1066 which increased to £24 by the survey publication date. From 1270 these values would have been worth £5,838.61 in 1066 and 1086 it increased £17,515.83. At this particular time, we have assumed that Tuffley was a hamlet as there was no place of worship listed. It is mentioned that the settlement was included in the parish of St. Mary de Lode. However, in 1900 the parish was divided up into separate pieces included in Whaddon and Quedgeley respectively. But this was altered again in 1935 when parts of Tuffley were included within the city of Gloucester itself. In a recent survey, the parish was declared as being under the jurisdiction of St. Barnabas built in 1939-40.
